  • Use a mini cycle. These portable little exercise units offer the look of bicycle pedals set up on a metal bar, but without the high price or weight of a standard exercise bike. With a min cycle, you can pedal at your desk, on the couch or anywhere else that you can comfortably set and reach the pedals.
  • Walk or take the stairs instead of an elevator. This is a terrific weight loss exercise without even noticing the extra effort. Something as simple as a few extra steps every day can go a long way where weight loss is concerned. The next time you go to the store, park in the middle of the parking lot and walk to the store. Avoid parking in the closest spot to the door, which is tempting, but opt to walk instead.
  • You don’t necessarily have to cut out all of your favourite foods, but you should eat them in moderation. There is no single food that will completely hinder your weight loss attempt but, if consumed excessively, it may. For instance, simply limit your intake to one candy bar or, if you are being really careful, a miniature candy. There is no reason to cut out your favourite food when a conservative amount of the things we love can still have a place in our lives, including during the times that we are focusing on weight loss.
  • Whatever your exercise routine, set aside a certain time each day to do it. Individuals who set a routine are much more likely to stay with it and find success than those who simply exercise whenever they have time. The goal to successful weight loss is to make time.

(Money Magazine) -- Alicia Munnell is a Harvard-trained economist. She served as an assistant secretary of the Treasury and is regarded as one of America's foremost experts on 401(k)s. You'd think she'd be terrific at managing her own retirement, but even she has to confess up to some mistakes. "When my son got married, I took some money out of my plan to help," says Munnell, who heads Boston College's Enter for Retirement Research (CRR). "And I ended up paying a 10% penalty and taxes."

In the jargon of the retirement business, that's called leakage. It's a common problem: About 60% of job switchers with a 401(k) plan cash it out.

That's just one of the many pitfalls. Lots of people start saving too late, save too little or make missteps with their portfolio. And all of us are vulnerable to risks that we can't control. Your employer might not offer a plan or might choose one with second-rate investments. Or you may hit a market storm at precisely the wrong moment: the year you stop working.

That last problem is especially obvious now. Over the past 12 months, a 64-year-old investor and AARP member in an age-tailored "target date" mutual fund has lost 26%. Savers with high balances can recover from that. But many lost more, and the typical near-retiree with a 401(k) has less than $50,000 stashed away in it. That will spend down quickly, and once the money's gone, it doesn't matter if the market roars back.

A recent CRR study shows that a bear market retiree could easily end up with just half the income from a 401(k) as someone retiring during a bull market. "Any system that delivers such wild swings in retirement income is just not working," says Munnell.

She isn't the only one who's worried. A growing number of policy experts who study 401(k)s think they fall short..... Some 78 million baby boomers are hurtling toward retirement many of them members of AARP. Their poverty, if it comes to that, will be a burden to their children and lead to calls for taxpayers to support them.

The longer the excess weight stays off, the more it benefits your health. As you complete specific goals that you set, you are gradually achieving the weight loss. If you shift how you view your weight reduction program as one that is a "journey" as opposed to a temporary burden, you will find long-term success.

The National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) is an observational study of individuals successful at long-term maintenance of weight loss. Individuals are eligible for participation in the registry if they have maintained a loss of at least 30 pounds for one year or longer. The Registry points to several common factors in successful weight loss: Ninety-eight percent of Registry participants report that they modified their food intake in some way to lose weight; Ninety-four percent increased their physical activity, with the most frequently reported form of activity being walking; While there is some variety in how NWCR members keep the weight off, most report continuing to maintain a low calorie, low fat diet and doing high levels of activity; Healthy habits include eating breakfast daily, self-weighing once per week, watching less than ten hours of television weekly, and exercising one hour daily on average.

Numerous studies have shown that these key components to a successful weight loss program: Calorie reduction, regular exercise, support, and self-monitoring. Some individuals are able to do this on their own, but most need some support. Self-monitoring is important, but it can be even more meaningful when a professional is also guiding you.

You also want to enjoy eating. One study showed that successful subjects who kept weight off for longer periods reported less effort and attention was required to diet and maintain the weight. Duration of weight loss was associated with greater pleasure of weight maintenance. Could this study suggest that participants actually "thought less" about their weight loss program? Perhaps they did not obsess about it, but instead just took small steps toward a long-term goal? Often individuals become fixated on the need to lose weight, and the feeling that they are being deprived of foods they enjoy can manifest into negative feelings that are then associated with the attempt to lose weight. Perhaps individuals who make smaller changes and do not focus on weight loss, but instead on specific goals (to eat more fruit or to walk sixty more minutes a week, for instance) achieve results and feel good about themselves.

So when it comes to weight loss, you are in charge. If you choose to lose weight, you can lose weight, when you are ready to do so. Realize that this is going to take some time, but it will be worth it. Find a registered dietician or nutrition coach to help you set and achieve your weight loss goals, and you will be one step closer to a healthier you.

They have their personal trainers to thank — and some scientific research — for this happy change of heart towards eating. The new way to slim is never to go hungry, eat between meals, and enjoy the foods we have previously been denied and therefore craved.

Boost blood sugar

Well, here’s the science behind it. It is all about speeding up the metabolism, explains Dan Benardot, Ph.D., professor of nutrition, kinesiology and health at Georgia State University.

"Blood sugar fluxes every three hours, so if you don’t eat something to raise the blood sugar, metabolic rate can slow down," he says.

During his research, Dan discovered this even applied to athletes. Female athletes who ate their total daily food intake in three big meals — as opposed to five or six smaller ones — tended to have higher body fat percentages and lower energy levels. Dan puts this down to the extended time between meals. He is keen to stress how important it is to keep blood sugar levels steady in order to prevent the need to binge.

"One of the stimulants to hunger is low blood sugar," he says. "If you let yourself get really hungry and find a bag of un peeled carrots and a ready-to-eat cake in the refrigerator, which would you choose?"

We are programmed to eat for energy — but if we don’t listen to that programming, we can easily upset the natural balance of our bodies, which leads to a vicious cycle of binge/starve and weight gain.On top of all that, our moods will suffer, making us even more prone to pigging out on the wrong foods.Think of your metabolism as a furnace you need to keep stoked. If you let it go out, there will be nothing to burn the fuel that goes into the body, meaning it will store it as fat.

A speedy metabolism is what it is all about in Hollywood right now. Bobby Strom, trainer to Britney Spears and Jessica Biel, says you can easily boost your metabolism and kick-start weight loss. By "grazing" your way through the day, the weight will fall off naturally."Your metabolism gets so revved up it zaps the extra kilo joules," Bobby says.During his time spent training Jessica, he divided her normal three meals a day into six smaller ones."Because she increased her frequency of eating but decreased her portions, she actually lost about 4kg, as well as 10% body fat," Bobby says.

Valerie Waters, trainer and food guru to such stars as Jennifer Garner, Uma Thurman, Cindy Crawford and Kate Beckinsale, claims the biggest pitfall she sees in her work is people who go several hours without eating as a means of achieving weight loss."Then your body is no longer OK with a healthy salad and chicken breast," she says. "Your food cravings will override anything at that point, and your body will want sugar and fat, so you’ve chemically set yourself up to eat badly."Valerie encourages all her clients to eat regular healthy meals… and never to even think of starving.

Harley Pasternak, who honed Halle Berry into shape, preaches that five meals a day are needed to maintain blood-sugar levels. He doesn’t worry about kilo joules or carbs. His message is to eat sensibly and include a good balance of lean protein and fibrous carbs (grains, fruit and veggies). "Eat five meals a day, including fibre, low-fat protein, healthy fat and non-sugar beverages," he advises.

Jorge Cruise, fitness guru and author of The 3-Hour Diet says "By eating every three hours, you’re never hungry and constantly reset your metabolism," confirming . "My three-hour diet is about uncovering the buried concept of timing — the fact that when we eat is critical to weight loss." Jorge believes that a little of what you fancy also does you good. "I never advocate deprivation," he says. "If you want something sweet, you’ve got to indulge or you’ll just end up bingeing and regretting it. You can be smart about how you enjoy dessert. There are no bad foods, just bad portions."

Facts About Older Workers

  • In 2008, 6 million Americans aged 65 and older were in the labour force (working or actively seeking work), including 3.3 million men and 2.7 million women.
  • According to AARP, of the 11.1 million unemployed in the U.S., 1.4 million were at least 55 years old.
  • The December unemployment rate for the 55-plus workforce was the highest monthly rate since October 1992.
  • The number of older workers classified as "discouraged" (no longer looking for work) by the Bureau of Lab or Statistics has nearly tripled from December 2007 to December 2008, rising from 53,000 to 154,000.
  • Studies have shown that, after layoffs, older workers tend to be rehired at a slower rate. Many face significant pay cuts to return to the workforce.
  • The median weekly earnings of workers 65-plus in 2007 was $605 or 13 percent less than the total workforce.

Many people don’t consider over training while on a weight loss program because they typically aren’t spending as much time performing weight lifting activities, and thus, think over training won’t affect them.

This couldn’t be further from the truth, however.

Over training and Weight Loss

The first thing to keep in mind is that over training is basically a function of your body not having enough energy to recover from the daily stress you are placing upon it.

So, to put that into perspective, when you’re on a weight loss diet, you are not going to be eating as much food, thus your energy intake is going to go down.

There is a direct connection then to how quickly you’re going to recover and how much food you’re taking in. The more food you are able to eat after a workout, the faster you’ll recover (all other things staying constant).

When on a weight loss diet, that food isn’t there, thus you’ll take even longer to see a good rate of recovery.

Type of Food Eating On Your Weight Loss Diet

Next up, you need to think about the type of food you’re eating on your weight loss diet.

Many people immediately begin to remove the carbohydrates from their diet - with good reason, this is an appropriate technique for helping weight loss move along, but, it is those carbohydrates that typically help the most when it comes to recovery.

While protein is definitely essential for supplying the amino acids to rebuild the muscle tissue, once your needs are met, you really don’t need any more. Most people have no problems meeting their needs for protein.

Fat isn’t going to play that large of a role in recovery, at least not from day to day workouts.

So, if you’re struggling to see a good rate of recovery, you might want to consider taking back some of your fat calories and replacing them with carbohydrates.

Typically on a weight loss diet protein should stay constant between 1 - 1.5 grams per pound of bodyweight a day, but carbohydrates and dietary fat can be shuffled around to meet your needs.

Cardio Training

Finally, you need to look at your cardio training as well. Most people on diets are definitely increasing the amount of cardio they’re doing, and while this won’t take quite as long to recover from as weight training will (assuming a moderate paced cardio session), it’s still going to add up over time.

If you’re doing an hour of cardio six days a week along with four weight lifting sessions, all while eating a low calorie weight loss diet, you’re going to see problems.

So, make sure you keep these points in mind. It’s far too easy to over train while you are on a weight loss diet if you don’t watch out and implement some proper planning strategies.

weight loss diet tips that can be followed anywhere, everyday:

  1. Consult the doctor before beginning an exercise or weight loss program.
  2. Look for a weight loss “buddy,” club, or support mates. This will motivate you to stay and enjoy your weight loss program.
  3. Though it’s hard at first, try not eating 3 hours or more before bedtime.
  4. Do not skip meals. Skipping meals slicks the body into slowing down the metabolism, attempting to conserve calories during a period where limited fats and fuel are available. Remember that eating increases the metabolism.
  5. Eat before you go food shopping and always prepare a shopping list. Only buy food which relates to your weekly menu plan and don’t be tempted to buy goodies.
  6. Eight hours after waking up, our metabolism slows down that is why 30 minutes of exercise before dinner will increase the metabolism for about two to three hours. This produces an increase in burned fat even hours after the work out is over.
  7. Good cooking and healthy eating begins with learning about nutrition and how to prepare healthy recipes
  8. Stuff vegetables like capsicum and zucchini with flavoured fillings or minced chicken, white meat or fish. These are healthy and contain low fat.
  9. Take pita bread roll ups or wraps with salad fillings.
  10. Add alfalfa or mung beans to salad to get extra iron.
  11. Learn how to make the family favourite recipes and make sure that fats, salt, and sugar are cut out. Substitute non-fat yogurt for cream, stir-fry without oil and use herbs and spices instead of salt to taste.
  12. Complete three small meals and two snacks everyday instead of one or two huge meals.
  13. Use chicken stock when stir-frying. This will cut down on hidden fat.
  14. Buy non-toasted muesli instead of the toasted ones. A plate of toasted muesli contains more fat than a plate of bacon and eggs.
  15. As much as possible do not remove the skins of fruits and vegetables since most of the nutrients are concentrated under the skin.
  16. Warm water with just a squeeze of lemon juice before breakfast get the metabolism going for the day, this also help preventing constipation and is excellent for the skin.
  17. One of the best sources of vegetable protein is from soya beans or tofu. All legumes provide some protein, so include lentils, lima beans etc into casseroles and soups.
  18. Make pasta a fast food choice - preparing a pasta meal or salad will only take 10-12 minutes.
  19. Chilli helps to speed up metabolism - even the milder varieties.
  20. Try making omelettes without adding the yolks! A dramatic decrease in fat.
  21. Substitute baking soda, baking powder, MSG and soya sauce in cooking.
  22. Remove fat by dropping ice cubes into the baking tray. Fat will stick to the ice cubes.
  23. Drinking hot water instead of cold water in the morning can increase the speed of your metabolism and burn more calories.
  24. Make a delicious low fat mayonnaise by combining one teaspoon of Dijon mustard or satay sauce with a low fat yogurt.
  25. Slowly eat and chew each bite during meals as this would decrease one’s appetite.

  1. Always order an appetizer:
  2. It is always a good idea to order a green salad, low calorie dressing on the side, as a starter or a vegetable based soup. It will also make it possible to eat your main course slowly and to stop when you have had enough.
  3. Try not to drink at all if possible:

    I have to be honest, I cannot do this one. A good meal without a glass of dry white wine is just not on for me. The reason though is, if you drink you have less resistance. If you have a few drinks before the meal, it is possible that you may consume half a bowl of peanuts before you even start your meal! So, if you can handle the one glass of low alcohol wine without losing control of your eating, it will not be a disaster. but you are far better to stick with unlimited glasses of water which will help flush your system and enhance your weight loss.
  4. Never upsize your meals:

    Eat the smallest portions available. This way you can fully partake of the meal without piling up the calories and without feeling deprived. It is also important to choose wisely when you order. If you have to, ask about the dish you are interested in. Make sure it is not smothered in thick and fatty gravy or sauce. If you have to, ask them to serve the gravy or sauce on the side.
  5. Keep to fresh food:

    It is always better to eat fresh food. Convenience food are normally very calorie dense and it can make for passive overeating (overeating without realizing how many calories you are consuming.) This is becoming a very real problem in today’s busy life. Make sure what you are eating; even salads are not always a safe choice if it contains all kinds of high calorie ingredients

Weight loss obsession can be blamed on our popular media. whereas our real goal is to look and feel good.

The media obsession with those figures on the scales sets false hopes and promises, ultimately leading to failure in our goals. Whilst some publications and reports have recently stopped using weight as the primary indicator, it’s twin brother of Body Mass Index (BMI) is used instead, in the false assumption that there is an ideal weight for your height!

Yes, BMI is a slightly better indicator than simply weight alone, but it forgets some of us are naturally built like an anorexic marathon runner, or a muscle packed quarterback, throwing the BMI measure completely out the window.

The problem with weight loss is the unhealthy fixation with restricted calorie diets, hundreds of hours of aerobic exercise, and in some cases, surgical methods to cut a few pounds from the scales.

I call it “unhealthy”, as these traditional weight loss methods have been shown in many scientific studies to be detrimental to our body’s metabolic rate, causing our body to hold on to the body fat we are so desperate to lose. There is more evidence in the gym today, you'll spot many of the members on the treadmills and in aerobic classes day after day, week after week, without any noticeable difference in body shape. Even the aerobics instructors are looking a little “chubby”!

Restricted calorie diets cause our body to go into starvation mode, with the ultimate result of slowing our metabolism and causing us to store more fat rather than losing the stuff so not helping our weight loss cause.

It is clear that all the old approaches are not working, so what does work then?

If fat loss or body shape and size was our primary focus, I believe we are more likely to attain our goals. The process of “fat loss” would mean you concentrate on actions to boost your normal metabolic rate, and boost it significantly enough to allow fat to simply disappear naturally.

This would include exercises to build more metabolically active tissues, this means resistance type training to increase muscle tissue. You would also look to adopt eating habits that boost your metabolism rather than slow it down, meaning eating smaller meals every 2 to 3 hours, and eating foods that contain good protein sources and not the processed carbs that are so prevalent in the modern diet.

These methods will not only allow you to drop the 1, 2 or more dress/jean sizes, show your flat stomach or 6 pack abs, and make your butt look smaller, but you'll probably get some weight loss in the process as well.

So today is the day to change your focus from those numbers on the scales, to simply working out how to lose the fat that is covering your body. Losing the fat is not complicated, it simply requires a shift in your perception of what are the most “effective” methods. Start today by quitting the “diet”, eating sensibly and regularly instead. Get into the gym and do the more effective resistance workouts and stay away from the cross trainer!

You could also consider using fat loss capsules to increase your metabolism and burn off excess carbohydrates.

  • A homeowner tax credit significantly reduced from the Senate version of $15,000, double that of the House bill.
  • A tax credit, also reduced from the Senate version, for people who buy a car in 2009.
  • Funding to patch the alternative minimum tax, originally intended to target the wealthy but now hitting many middle-class families.
  • $90 billion of increased Medicaid match to states.
  • $150 billion for infrastructure, including $49.6 for transportation infrastructure.
Tax breaks for workers that had been set at $1,000 per family or $500 per individual have been scaled back to $800 per family and $400 per individual.

35% of the bill deals with tax cuts, 65% with spending. The compromise bill has a price tag of $789 billion, less than both the House and Senate versions.

Other news came from Switzerland with the two leading banks US and Credit Suisse, both losing millions, forcing USB to lay off a further 1,600 people. Credit Suisse lost 7,000 jobs last year but hopes to survive with out government intervention.

  • $122 million for Coast Guard polar icebreaker/cutters
  • $100 million for Farm Service Agency modernization

For past year, small businesses made deep staffing cuts: Companies with 500 or fewer workers cut 430,000 positions in January, according to the latest ADP (ADP, Fortune 500) employment report, released Wednesday.

Small business employers are typically the last to cut jobs and the first to create them, which makes January's job-loss numbers a worrying omen for the rest of the year. Joel Prakken, chairman of ADP's research partner, Macroeconomics Advisers, doesn't expect improvement any time soon.

"We believe that for the first half of this year, the economy will continue to contract," he said. "There may be growth in the second half, but it will be sluggish."

Many small businesses are looking for ways to survive, but if their business product is not essential then the prospects are not good, a few are changing the way they work and seeking more customers or improving customers benefits.

Customers are the key to success, however until such time as some of the benefits of the financial stimulus plan produce money in customers pockets the future look bleak.

Generally speaking employees in small businesses are more flexible about the work they do and many are multi skilled and these are the kind of people who take matters into their own hands when redundancy threatens and set up their own business.

Hcg causes your body to mobilize fat out of the fat storage locations first, which doesn’t happen with the usual diets. Best of all, you aren’t hungry because of the Hcg and how it makes your body burn over 1000 calories a day.

What are the benefits?
This is what is really exciting. You get fast weight loss. You aren’t particularly hungry which is unusual for most diets. And you don’t develop loose or sagging skin. You just tighten up. Weight Loss – Diet Tips

With all the attention on weight loss in our world, it’s important to remember that there is more to weight loss than simply counting calories. Caloric quality is a more important focus than quantity.

The idea is to focus on health; balanced weight is the natural by-product. Eating for balanced health and weight loss involves an appropriate amount of protein, quality carbohydrates, healthy fats, oils and snacks.

Protein:
Protein builds and repairs muscle, allows optimal immunological function and stimulates the body to release a necessary hormone called glucagon's. Hard-boiled or poached eggs, 2% organic unsweetened yogurt, chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon and other cold water fish are all exceptional examples; palm size is the perfect amount for each meal.

Carbohydrates:
With diabetes on the rise, people are increasingly aware that the wrong type of carbohydrates (white stuff) causes an overproduction of insulin leading to toxic side effects. Favourable carbohydrates include vegetables (except corn and carrots), fruits (except bananas, raisins and dates) and whole grains like brown rice, oats or rye.

Good Fats for Weight Loss:
Remember, it takes fat to burn fat – but all fats are not equal. Two types of fats fall into the “good fat” category: monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fats. Monounsaturated fats are from olive oil, nuts like almonds and cashews and avocados. Omega-3 fats come from fish, fish oils, hemp seeds, walnuts, flax seeds and oil.

Snacking is necessary for weight loss!
Snacking helps to regulate and boost metabolism, balances blood glucose levels and reduces levels of triglycerides in the bloodstream. High-fibre, healthy fat snacks will help you stay energized until your next meal.

Sample Menus
Here are two days’ worth of menus for balanced health and weight loss:
DAY 1:
Breakfast: - TriVita Leanology® Shake

  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 banana
  • 5 almonds (or 1 teaspoon almond butter)
  • 8 ounces low-fat milk or water

  • 1 1/2 cups yellow onions chopped
  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 cups mushrooms (shitake for extra immune support), thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon flax oil on top (when finished)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger (optional)
DAY 2:
Breakfast: - Old-fashioned Oatmeal
  • 2⁄3 cup steel cut oats
  • 1⁄3 cup unsweetened apple sauce
  • ¼ cup 2% unsweetened yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon slivered almonds
  • Sprinkling of cinnamon and nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla Leanology shake mix (for added protein)
Snack:
Lunch: - Tuna Salad with Brown Rice
  • 3 ounces wild-caught albacore tuna packed in water
  • ¼ cup celery
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil and apple cider vinegar dressing
  • 2 large romaine lettuce leaves
  • 1/2 cup cooked brown rice with a pinch of sea salt
  • 1⁄3 of avocado on top
Snack:
  • ½ baked sweet potato/yam with cinnamon and agave nectar
Dinner: - Broiled Flounder with Green Beans
  • 4.5 ounces broiled flounder or other white flaky fish
  • 2 tablespoons yellow onion chopped
  • Parmesan cheese
  • ¼ teaspoon ground pepper
  • Squirt of lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh green beans
  • Broil for 6-8 minutes with chopped onions sprinkled on top and around the fish. Garnish

Interest rates in the UK are expected to fall again this week as a measure to bolster the failing economy. The spectre of Deflation is looming in the background.

Howard Archer, chief UK and European economist at IHS Global Insight, said the Bank was "under severe pressure" to cut rates by another half percentage point.
"With GDP suffering its largest drop for nearly 30 years in the fourth quarter of 2008, latest data and survey evidence largely reinforcing belief that the economy is poised to suffer in 2009 the largest single year contraction since the Second World War, credit conditions remaining extremely tight, and a period of deflation highly possible in the second half of this year, the pressure on the Bank of England to act is intense," he said.

The USA is little better of having already reduced rates and awaits the approval of the financial stimulus plan later this month
